Inspection of the photo shows that the part of the gate nearest the pillar is supported by an iron strap round the pillar; its lower end pivots in a socket (presumably) in the ground. The wrought ironwork is in contrast to the massive sandstone gate pillars. In the distance, at the top of the walk, is the stupendous war memorial. In the foreground, the way the paving has been laid in different directions makes a subtle distinction between areas for foot traffic and the area for vehicles.
