Remains of North Tower of Lindum Colonia East Gate
This is the site where the east gate of the Roman Fort (and later city, Lindum Colonia) once stood.
The earliest gate to stand here was part of the timber fortress built in AD60. After the legion left, the fort was rebuilt as a Colonia (a town for retired army veterans) called Lindum Colonia (from where the modern name Lincoln derives). The timber palisades of the fortress were replaced with stone walls and the gateways were strengthened and improved. By the third century AD, Lindum Colonia had developed into a high status city; in the early 200s, the gates were rebuilt in monumental style. These remains of the Roman North Tower are a Scheduled Ancient Monument Link and are Grade I-listed (English Heritage Building ID: 485983 Link British Listed Buildings) and were restored in 2011.
