One of only two remaining medieval gates giving access to the cathedral close surrounding Lincoln Cathedral (the other being Exchequer Gate), Potter Gate (or Pottergate Arch, as it is now known) was the south-east gateway to the Cathedral Close. It consists of a single high arch with an upper storey above, surmounted by battlements. The arch was restored in 1884 when a road was constructed round the Arch on the western side and up traffic passed round the arch and down traffic through it until 1938 when a road was constructed on the eastern side and the arch was made into a traffic island at the bottom of Pottergate with traffic passing either side.
The arch is grade-I listed by English Heritage (English Heritage Building ID: 486199 Link British Listed Buildings).
