David Hall (former United Reformed Church)ST4316 : David Hall, South PethertonST4316 : David Hall, South PethertonOpened in 1863 as a Congregational church and designed in Decorated style by Robert C. Bennett of Weymouth (not to be confused with the better-known Manchester architect Robert Isaac Bennett), it was listed Grade II in 1988. Since 1986 it has been the village community hall and arts centre, with the interior very little changed.
The
Victoria County History records that Presbyterian meetings in South Petherton began about 1663, shortly after the Restoration. A chapel was built on part of the present site in 1775. The Old Sunday School, presumably designed by Bennett to complement the church, can be seen to the right.
