cast iron bridge has been in need of repair for several years. It was intended to restore it before the 2014 Commonwealth Games, but problems arose when a contractor fell into administration and there were also difficulties in finding suitably skilled workers to carry out the job. Restoration is expected to take around one year.
During the Commonwealth Games, the parapets were blanketed in pink "People Make Glasgow" banners.
Historic Scotland describes it as "the only substantial wrought-iron arched bridge in Scotland, comparable to Westminster (London) Trent (Nottingham) and Lendal (York) Bridges in England".
Renovation of the bridge was under way in early 2016.
