Tynemouth Priory - The Percy Chantry
Tynemouth Priory - The Percy Chantry
This is a chapel where Mass would be chanted for the person or family who endowed it. It was named the Percy Chantry (in 1907) because the arms of the Percy family appear in its decoration. The chapel was built in the 15th C, and is the only part of the priory church to survive complete. It was repaired for use in funeral services for burials on the headland after the priory church was abandoned for a new church in North Shields in the 1660s. In 1810 it was converted into a magazine for storing ammunition. The chapel was restored by John Dobson LinkExternal link in 1850; there was further restoration work done in the late 1870s. {Source: Tynemouth Priory and Castle, English Heritage.}
