Entrance to Great Maytham Hall
The neo-Georgian Great Maytham Hall dates from 1909 and was designed by Sir Edward Lutyens. The centre block incorporates a house of 1721 but Lutyens encased it and added a third storey and extended it to left and right. This is the view through the lodge. Pevsner says "The lodge is distinctly more energetically designed than the house."
Lutyens added the top two storeys to an existing pile in 1910. There had been a fire that damaged the original C18 building in 1893, and Frances Hodgson Burnett had rented the house from 1898 to 1907 pending Lutyens' repairs.
