Statue, Custom House Square, Belfast (1)
The Custom House steps, Belfast, used to be a place (in the times before television) where people went on a Sunday afternoon to watch (and, presumably, heckle) the evangelists and public speakers in action. The tradition seems to have died with WWII. This statue, recently erected at the foot of the steps, is entitled “The Speaker”. As seems to be the current fashion it is not mounted on a plinth.
"The Speaker" sculpture, Custom House Square, Belfast
A life-size sculpture, by Gareth Knowles, on the Custom House steps, depicting a speaker addressing an audience in Custom House Square. The square was once a popular place for evangelism and other public speaking.
