RAF Little Snoring - Awards and Honours board (detail)
RAF Little Snoring - Awards and Honours board (detail)
Detail of one of the squadrons' two "Awards and Honours" boards which were on display in the Officers' mess of RAF Little Snoring when it was an active airfield during WW2. When the buildings on this site were demolished in the 1950s, the boards were rescued by the churchwarden, Mrs EG "Bessie" Whitehead of Green Farm. The signwriting was done by Leading Aircraftman Douglas Higgins of 23 Squadron during 1944/45. Together with its companions this board can now be seen on the west wall of St Andrew's church > LinkExternal link.
RAF Little Snoring
RAF Little Snoring was a WW2 RAF heavy bomber base, opened in 1943 and used by 100 Group. After 1945 it was used first for the storage of aircraft and then for maintenance; it became redundant as a military site in the late 1950s. At present, three of the four hangars are used for private aircraft storage and the fourth is used for storage, maintenance and sale of small private aircraft. An adjoining smaller building is used by the flying club. The surrounding land is in agricultural use. The tower is now derelict but the airfield remains open for general aviation and part of the main runway is still in use. See also: LinkExternal link
