Founded in 1790, Glasgow Humane Society is the world's oldest practical life-saving society. The society is based in the Officer's House on Glasgow Green, with a nearby boathouse and landing stage on the north bank of the River Clyde.
In addition to many other services, the society (which is a registered charity) Provides safety cover for the people who use the river for sporting and recreational purposes. This includes 14 rowing clubs, canoeists and The Rutherglen Cruising Club who make daily use of the River, plus commuters, members of the public and tourists who visit along the river bank and walkway.
