Old jet workings, Deepgrove
Old jet workings, Deepgrove
The 1894 1:2500 map shows these caves as old jet workings. Quarrying for alum shale also took place in the area and alum workers often came across jet, the fossilised remains of monkey puzzle trees, araucaria araucana, which sank into the sea bed millions of years ago in the Jurassic era and formed plank-like seams.
