Fortescue's pumping engine and whim houses - Wheal Grenville
Wheal Grenville, later Grenville United, was on the western end of the Great Flat Lode and operated between 1845 and 1920. It initially mined copper but this was progressively replaced by tin. On the left, further from the camera, is the house for a 90" Cornish beam pump and on the right is the house for the 28" rotative whim engine. These were erected in 1892 on Fortescue's shaft. On top of the bob wall for the pumping engine are visible the main bearing stools. These were re-erected here in 1983 when the engine's later home at South Crofty was demolished. It is very unusual to find significant remaining metalwork in these engine houses.
