Unseen underside-Spaghetti Junction, Birmingham
A scene perhaps unsuspected and unknown to some of the drivers passing overhead on the M6. In this view the River Tame, the Grand Union Canal on the aqueduct ahead and to the left the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal. After approval in 1784, the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal was completed in 1789, the engineer being John Smeaton. A start was made on the M6 in 1958 and the route was eventually completed in 1971. The Bromford Viaduct between Castle Bromwich and Brierley Hill is said to be the longest viaduct in Britain, at 3.5 miles (Wikipedia). Time taken 9.36 am GMT (Greenwich Mean Time).
