Clavell's Tower, Purbeck
Clavell's Tower, Purbeck
The tower as it was in January 2006. It has since been dismantled for rebuilding slightly inland. The cliffs here are unstable, and the tower was in danger of falling into the sea. Clavell's Tower was built in 1831 by the Reverend John Richards, who assumed the name Clavell after inheriting the Smedmore Estate. Initially built as a summerhouse, the tower was later used as a Coastguard lookout, but later fell into disrepair.
