On a building by Tippers Quay at the southern end of the South Embankment is this plaque commemorating John Davis (1550-1605) LinkExternal link , who discovered the Davis Strait while searching for a north-west passage to China, invented the Davis quadrant, and was killed by pirates off Sumatra.
