The building within the fort is a former farmhouse but at the time the photograph was taken it was in use as a YHA run Youth Hostel - it is no longer a YHA. Birdoswald is probably the only site on Hadrian's Wall at which significant occupation in the post-Roman period has been proven. Remains of the fort, called Banna, are in the foreground
