William Botterill (1820-1903) came to Kingston upon Hull in 1848 and set up an architectural practice in 1851. The special character and appearance of the Conservation Area lies in the retention of historic buildings (in two areas) to the north and south. These contrast with the modern developments in the middle and to the north-west, and contain all the traditional elements of village life, including church, school, public houses, landed properties and terraced dwellings.
