Ockley is a semi-rural village in Surrey. It is centred around the straight modern road using Stane Street, south of where it has diverged from the A24 from London. It has a medieval parish church.
Ockley has a Post Office, village shop and garage, and a local vegetables shop towards the station. There are also 3 pubs in the village.

Stane Street is the modern name given to an important 90-kilometre-long Roman road that linked London to the Roman town of Noviomagus Reginorum, or Regnentium, later renamed Chichester by the Saxons.
Today the Roman road is easily traceable on modern maps. Much of the route is followed by the A3, A24, A29 and A285, although most of the course through the modern county of Surrey has either been completely abandoned or is followed only by bridlepaths.

The A29 runs for 34 miles from the A24 at Capel, south of Dorking, through Billingshurst and Pulborough, crossing the South Downs at Bury Hill and passing Fontwell Park Racecourse before terminating on the B2166 on Bognor Regis sea front.
From Capel to Hardham, south of Pulborough, the road largely follows the path of the old Roman road, Stane Street.
