Modern quarry at Penwyllt
Unlike all the grassed over small scale quarries that used to provide employment for 300 workers in days long gone, this quarry is still being used - although it was closed until recently. In the last few months it has reopened to provide rocks used in constructing access routes for the controversial gas pipeline that is being constructed from Milford Haven to Aberdulais and then north around to Brecon. Thus the pipeline is threatening the park twice: once with its chosen route and then here where this quarry neighbours the Ogof Ffynnon Ddu nature reserve that has been created to protect the extensive caves in this mountain from being quarried away.
