V9948 : Bantry Town and Harbour The single storey building on the right is the old schoolhouse that was my grandparents' home early last century. This peaceful scene is in contrast to events in Bantry during the civil war when the town was under siege from Anti-Treaty forces during the summer of 1922. A lull in the exchanges of machine gun and small arms fire, eventually allowed my grandparents and their children to be evacuated to the comparitive safety of Bantry House under a flag of truce (a handkerchief tied to a broomhandle). Stirring times!
