Stunning Skyscape
The lenticular clouds above the wind sock at the gliding club are mountain lee wave, caused by strong winds setting up standing waves in the air over the mountains. Such conditions are much sought after by glider pilots, because the waves can go many times higher than the mountains that set them up. The UK gliding height record of almost 38,000 feet was achieved in wave conditions.
