NY4055 : Subway at Carlisle railway station

taken 10 years ago, near to Carlisle, Cumbria, England

Subway at Carlisle railway station
Subway at Carlisle railway station
The subway, together with two new lifts, provides much improved passenger access between platforms. It opened in April 2014.
The tunnel was already there, presumably since 1847 when the Citadel Station was built. A photo taken from the same spot in 2009, during a station open day, shows what it used to be like NY4055 : Tunnel under the tracks, Carlisle Citadel Station, 2009 .
A lot of work was required to bring the subway up to the current standard, so any remarks about it being a bit claustrophobic and having a funny smell would be unkind.
