St Dympna's Hospital, formerly Carlow Lunatic Asylum, was built to a design by Francis Johnston and was completed in 1834. This image shows only part of a very long frontage.

St. Dympna is the patron saint of those who suffer from mental illnesses and nervous system disorders, epileptics, mental health professionals, incest victims and runaways. She was born in Clogher, Co. Monaghan in the year c.620 and was murdered by her father at the age of 14.
