Toc H Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum
A view from the TocH memorial towards the mound (Armed Services Memorial) at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. The Memorial to the TOC H Christian organization consists of a bronze TOC H lamp sitting on top of a brick plinth.
The name comes from a rest house for soldiers at Poperinge in Belgium, approx 6 miles from Ypres, which was open from 1915 until the end of World War I. The home was given the name Talbot House (TH=Toc H) in memory of Lieutenant Gilbert Talbot, killed in action, the brother of Rev Talbot who first had the idea for a rest home. It is now called the 'Lamp of Maintenance'.
The famous lamp is an oil lamp used by Rev 'Tubby' Clayton who ran the home. Post World War I, Toc H adopted the lamp as its symbol and the principles of fellowship, service, fair-mindedness and reconciliation.
