The Bevin Boys Memorial
The Bevin Boys Memorial
The Bevin Boys memorial is created in stone from a quarry in Kilkenney in Ireland. The rough surface of the stone reembles the natural dark grey colour of coal, especially when wet. The memorial, designed by former Bevin Boy Harry Parkes, was unveiled at The National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas, Staffordshire in May 2013 by the Countess of Wessex.

During World War II, there was a shortage of skilled mine workers and between 1943 and 1948 nearly 48000 British young men known as Bevin Boys LinkExternal link , were conscripted to work alongside regular miners in their dirty, dangerous but essential work keeping the coal supplies flowing.

Life was hard and dangerous for these men and many lost their lives. The programme was wound up in 1948. At that time the Bevin Boys received no medals, nor the right to return to the jobs they had held previously, unlike armed forces personnel. It is a shameful reflection on the UK that Bevin Boys were not fully recognised as contributors to the country's war effort until 1995, 50 years after VE Day, in a speech by Queen Elizabeth II.
