Mowing the Verges
Mowing the Verges
As there are few vehicles on the roads slower than one of these verge mowers, we had more than enough time to observe this one, and to question why it is thought desirable, let alone necessary, to mow the verges of straight minor roads like this one. The unmown verge on the right looks no worse than the mown one on the left (I actually think it looks better) and cutting the grass every week, or fortnight, or month, or however often it is, all summer, must cost an absolute fortune. This must surely be a potential target for reducing pointless public expenditure? Just confine the regular cuts to inside bends where tall vegetation would affect the line of sight, and mow the rest just once a year to discourage trees and whins, and they could save billions in the roads budgets.
