National Memorial Arboretum, Naval Services Memorial
The Naval Service Memorial was unveiled by Prince Michael of Kent at the National Memorial Arboretum in June 2014 Link
(BBC News).
The glass sculpture was commissioned by the Royal Naval Association (RNA) which describe it as the nation's first "all-inclusive memorial"; a memorial for all those who have served in the Royal Navy and associated services.
The memorial is made up of thirteen 10-foot-tall glass panels, which its designer Graeme Mitcheson described as "sails of coloured glass" representing the oceans around the world. The panels are flecked with white spume and streaks of red to represent the blood of those who died in the service of their country.A bowed figure stands beside the panels, facing the setting sun and when light passes through them. The theme for the memorial is described as being: "At the going down of the sun we will remember them'.
The memorial is not specifically to remember those who have died, but honours and celebrates all who joined the naval service, or will do so in the future.
