Millport Gasworks - retorts
Millport Gasworks - retorts
Millport on Great Cumbrae Island was the last traditional 'town gas' gasworks in the UK and was still at work when I took this photograph of the two 'benches' of 6 horizontal retorts. The circular door at the bottom of the benches is for the fire that heats the retorts and I saw this being stoked with hot coke from one of the discharged retorts. I should have photographed the process of charging and discharging but in those days I was very miserly with film of 'non-steam' subjects. The retort house was very gloomy and even if I had a flash I wouldn't have been allowed to use it.

This has all now gone.
