Backbarrow Ironworks - steam blowing engine
Backbarrow Ironworks - steam blowing engine
This is the horizontal single cylinder steam blowing engine that provided the blast for the adjoining blast furnace. This is by Tangyes Ltd, Birmingham and was installed secondhand c1924 and is believed to have stopped in the late 1950s. The cylinder is c18" x 36" and fitted with an expansion slide valve. The flywheel is 12' 6" diameter. The blowing cylinder is on the piston tail rod and the edge of it is seen extreme bottom left. This building was derelict and dangerous in 1986 and I'm sure it is even worse now. I last saw this in 2002 - SD3584 : Backbarrow Ironworks - blowing engine house.
