This former naval reserve battery now houses a remarkable collection of articles found during the excavation of Alauna, a Roman fort in the field to the right of the picture. The result is a vivid insight into life in the Romano-British period when a series of forts along the Cumbrian coast were maintained, effectively as a western extension of Hadrian's Wall.
