The Coalheavers Arms, Peterborough
The Coalheavers Arms on Park Street in the Woodston area of the city was built in the 1850s. On the night of November 16th., 1940, it gained the unfortunate distinction of being the only pub in Peterborough to be bombed by the German Luftwaffe; in the spirit of the times, it reopened for business as usual on the same day.
The Coalheavers was acquired in June 2002 by Individual Pubs Limited, a company which operates pubs supplied by Milton Brewery, an independent brewery based at Waterbeach near Cambridge. Despite its unassuming exterior, this real ale pub is a hidden treasure, tucked away on a residential street off London Road which would be very easy to miss if one were not aware of its existence.
