HMS Belfast - forward engine room - air ejectors
In condensing reciprocating steam engines it was normal to remove condensate and entrained air with a reciprocating air pump. This is usually a very easy item to identify, especially when you have seen a good number of steam engines. With all but the smallest and oldest turbines, the condensate is removed by a centrifugal pump and the air is handled either by a steam jet extractor or a liquid ring (Nash) pump.

These are the two sets of two stage air ejectors with intermediate jet condenser that are found at the forward end of the forward engine room on HMS Belfast. These can be difficult to identify in a turbine ship and on one occasion I failed to find the air handling plant (on an elderly American tanker in Hartlepool with no ship's engineer to ask).
