Old Grit engine house
Old Grit engine house
This is part of the White Grit Mine known as Old Grit. This single wall is next to an open stone-lined shaft and is believed to be the remains of the engine house containing a 1783 Boulton & Watt beam engine with a 30" x 8' cylinder. The mine was allegedly worked out by 1785 and the engine was dismantled in 1786 and taken for re-use.

The mine was re-opened in 1825 with new shafts and new engine houses being built.
