A tour to the Skellig Islands with Nonna and Eileen from Far Horizons. A beautiful day for the trip to this UNESCO world heritage site. The site comprises the remains of several phases of early ecclesiastical settlement, the earliest possibly dating to the 7th century AD. The remains of several dry-stone rounded habitation cells are present on the summit of the rocky island along with a later oratory of high medieval date. The island, situated 12 miles off the Iveragh peninsula, is also home to a thriving puffin community.
The monastery’s exact date of foundation is not known. The first definite reference to monastic activity on the island is a record of the death of “Suibhini of Skelig” dating from the 8th century, however Saint Fionán is claimed to have founded the monastery in the 6th century.
