An inspection of the slag heaps and outcrops dumped here from the old Carnforth iron works often reveals large disc-shaped plugs. Some of them obviously have a high iron content, hence the rusty composition as shown here. I imagine they were plugs of some kind used to hold molten iron or waste slag in a container but I would not know.
