The sword is a reminder of the means of Paul's martyrdom – he was beheaded in Rome in 67 AD.

The high-naved, short-towered, prominently sited church took shape over a long period in the medieval era. Work started in the late 13th century, the chancel arch and porch are a century later, the nave and tower were added after 1500, and Slater and Christian restored the building in 1863.
