Portesham House: former home of the other Thomas Hardy (1)
There is a little slice of British history in this quintessential Georgian village house, as it was once the home of Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy until his marriage in 1807. He was Admiral Lord Nelson's flag captain on HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar, and was immortalised when the dying Nelson made his famous remark 'Kiss me Hardy'. Nelson's Hardy is commemorated with a magnificent monument on Black Down hill overlooking the village of Portesham. SY6187 : Black Down Hill: Hardy Monument (1)
