Black Down Hill: Hardy Monument (1)
Black Down Hill: Hardy Monument (1)
The 72 foot high monument to Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy is at a stunning location 780 feet above sea level on top of Black Down Hill. Overlooking Hardy's home village of Portesham, it was erected in 1844 by public subscription, the monument being representative of a spyglass as used on board ship (although some say an inverted cannon!).
