SX9783 : Floods at Powderham
taken 11 years ago, near to Powderham, Devon, England

A 45 mile walk along the Exe valley. The route from the Exe Estuary to the steeply wooded valleys on Exmoor follows, for the most part, quiet country lanes and footpaths along the Exe valley through Bickleigh, Tiverton and Bampton. Mostly valley scenery, ranging from the broad estuary through pastoral landscapes and narrower, heavily-wooded valleys to open moorland landscapes.
The castle is privately owned (i.e. nor English Heritage or National Trust) and is still the seat of the Courtenays, Earls of Devon. Medieval in origin, heavily altered in the 18th & 19th centuries. Grade 1 listed, a full description can be found at Link
. It is open to the public and admission includes access to the Belvedere, but not to Powderham Park (see separate shared description), the deer park around the castle.
The South West Coast Path National Trail - 630 miles of superb coastal walking. From Minehead on the edge of the Exmoor National Park to the shores of Poole Harbour in Dorset. It is the longest of all Britain's National Trails.
