The Nidd viaduct at Bilton which stands at 104 feet above the river was built in 1848 and was part of the now defunct railway line which used to run to Ripley, Ripon and Thirsk, carrying freight (mainly coal and later gas) and passengers until it closed in 1967.

The Nidd Valley Railway was a 14 mile long single track branch railway line that ran along the valley of the River Nidd in North Yorkshire. Built by the North Eastern Railway, it ran from Nidd Junction, on the Harrogate to Ripon line, to Pateley Bridge via five intermediate stations, Ripley Valley, Hampsthwaite, Birstwith, Darley, and Dacre.
It opened in 1862, closing to passengers in 1950 and freight in 1964.
