Grade I listed

Supposedly the first Norman church in England, this cruciform church stands at the west gate of Pevensey Castle and dates back to the late 11th century, mainly the south nave wall and transept. The arch from the nave into the south transept is also from that date.
The church may have been of the Hospital of Saint Cross originally.

In the late 14th century the north aisle and tower were added. The broad tower with buttresses is probably due to the marshy ground upon which it was built.
The nave has a five Bay arcade and the chancel arch dates from about 1420 when the chancel was rebuilt.
There is a large five light east window with original 15th C. glass in the tracery. There was originally a rood screen with stairs to the rood loft. The nave has a fine timbered roof with crown posts the west end and queen posts to the main part.
A north porch was added around 1500, the font dates from slightly earlier.
The south transept was used as a school in the mid is 19th-century.
In 1873 restoration was carried out. The seating was increased at that time. In 1928 work was done on the foundations of the church.

The church has a total of three piscinas dating from the 13th century onwards. There is a much restored 15th century screen and the chancel contains two 13th century tomb stones with floriated crosses.
