The Great Tower of Tattershall Castle
The Great Tower of Tattershall Castle
The first castle here was built in the 13th century by Robert de Tateshale, who fought in France for Henry III. By the 15th century the castle had passed to Ralph, 3rd Baron Cromwell. In 1433 he was appointed Lord Treasurer to Henry VI and he used the rewards of this high office to build the 100-foot high Great Tower. The Earls of Lincoln occupied the castle until 1693, after which it gradually decayed into a ruin. In 1911 Lord Curzon came to the rescue when he excavated the moats and restored the building. He bequeathed the site to the National trust when he died in 1925.
