Jenny Frisk Road
Who was Jenny Frisk? A search in Google reveals some pretty unsavoury sites. But she has a road named after her, an unsurfaced track climbing from Boosbeck to Low Moor. It's officially a public road, meaning cars can be driven up it.
I have since been informed that Jenny Frisk was in fact a local woman who was drowned in a well near the top of the lane because she was believed to have been a witch. A classic case of witch ducking I fear. If she survived she was in league with the devil. If she was drowned she was innocent.
Locally the lane is known as 'Tip Lane' on account there used to be a open land fill site up it. The northern end, near Boosbeck, was named as 'Mutton Scalp Road' on old O.S. 2½" to the mile maps (Pronounced 'Mutton Scawp'). 'Jenny Frisk Road' referring to the straighter higher section.
