This inscribed stone, with the City of Newcastle coat of arms, is part of the NZ2564 : CastleGate, Melbourne Street, NE1 - former entrance. During the English Civil War, Newcastle supported the king and in 1644 the city was besieged for many months. The grateful King bestowed the motto "Fortiter Defendit Triumphans" ("Triumphing by a brave defence") on the town. Full details of the coat of arms are given at LinkExternal link .
