The large block of granite, with drinking fountain, commemorates Adam Sedgwick (1785 - 1873), an important figure in the development of geology in the 19th century. He was born in the village and eventually became a professor of geology at the University of Cambridge, where the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences was opened in 1904.
