NS5943 : Memorial enclosure, Whitelee Forest

taken 5 years ago, 3 km from Hareshaw, South Lanarkshire, Great Britain

Memorial enclosure, Whitelee Forest
Memorial enclosure, Whitelee Forest
Once this would have been moorland, some distance, as now, from habitation. The monument in the decayed fenced enclosure reads:
Eupehmia Whyte
In memory of her husband
William Smith
Of Townhead, Newmilns
Born 31st August 1825
Dies 11th April 1895
The above
Euphemia Whyte
Born 18th February 1838
Died 19th September 1908

Mr Smith was a Commissioner of Supply in Ayrshire and had an estate in Newmilns. I have not found out why there is a memorial and possible grave out here.
