The top of Carman Hill
The top of Carman Hill
Right of centre in the foreground is a modern cairn (made within the last decade), but, as far as I can tell, it does not mark the highest point of the hill.

The picture was taken within the inner enclosure of the old hill-fort. To the right of the marker cairn, and a little further away than it, are some boulders: NS3779 : Boulders on Carman Hill; they are in the fort's outer enclosure.

NS3778 : Carman Reservoir see Link for more pictures is prominent in the background. Further away, placed fairly centrally in the distance, Dumbarton Rock can be seen on the near shore of the Clyde. NS4274 : Dumbuck Quarry is behind the left-hand end of the reservoir. Most of the areas of housing that can be seen in the present picture are in Dumbarton; the distant ones on the left are in Dumbarton's Bellsmyre area. However, the nearest houses, behind the left-hand side of the reservoir, are in Dalquhurn, beside the River Leven, in Renton.
Carman Hill-fort

This large hill-fort see LinkExternal link (at Canmore) was identified in 1954 from aerial photographs, and is thought to date from the Early Historic period (Dark Ages). See Link for a Geograph article on the fort. See LinkExternal link for an annotated satellite view, and Link for other antiquities nearby.
