Converted in 1826 into a weigh house for the Stockton and Darlington Railway, this building is believed to have also sold passenger tickets after 1836 making it one of the oldest railway ticket offices in the world. It continued as a goods station long after passengers had transferred to the current Stockton railway station.
The site is also historic in that the first tracks of the Stockton and Darlington Railway were laid here in 1822.
