Lych Gate, Church of St Michael, Warden
Lych Gate, Church of St Michael, Warden
Intended as a shelter for coffins on arrival at the church the Lych-Gate was erected in 1903 by Reverend Cruddas. Near the outside wall, there is a mounting block for those who used to come to church on horseback. The Lytch-Gate is in a Free Gothic style with an ornate timber superstructure on moulded stone plinth, four gables with traceried barge-boards above shouldered arches which have carved foliage in spandrels. An inscription commemorates Mary, wife of George Cruddas.
