Patrick Leigh Fermor died on 10 June 2011 in the village of Dumbleton in Gloucestershire. The gravestone was unveiled at a short ceremony on 8 November 2013.

He was an author, scholar and soldier and he had been described as Britain's greatest living travel writer. At the age of 18 in 1933, he walked across Europe from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople, many years later he published two books, 'A Time of Gifts' and 'Between the Woods and the Water' describing this journey. A third book, 'The Broken Road: From the Iron Gates to Mount Athos' which completes his journey was published after his death. During World War II he fought in Greece and Crete, his experiences later being dramatised in the film 'Ill Met by Moonlight'. Along with his wife he lived for many years in Greece.
